....t he radio station brags about playing classic rock, and then plays a song you listened to in high school.

And to make it even worse, it’s not even “rock.” It was Hungry Like The Wolf by Duran Duran.

Back in the day, I was listening to a lot more Led Zeppelin and CSNY and The Doors and Uriah Heep and stuff like that. I thought Duran Duran sucked. Now that I’m older, I think they were actually a pretty good band, and maybe even one of the great bands of the era.

I can’t remember what it was, but just the other day I was explaining something to my boys that they had absolutely no frame of reference for. I was teaching a trumpet lesson to a sixth grader, and I made a reference to a typewriter. I got a blank stare until I said “keyboard.”

Was waiting for my physical the other day. Radio in the lobby was playing a local oldies station. K C & The Sunshine Band - Get Down Tonight comes on. Brought a smile to my face and conjured up memories of holding hands with a girl skating at the roller rink, wearing bell bottoms and one of my satin shirts . Although it was 45 years ago, it s eemed like yesterday for just a brief moment.

On a similar note, I’ve noticed that the radio stations in my area that used to play oldies are now primarily playing ’80s tunes. Which is great and all, but there’s nobody left broadcasting The Beach Boys, Temptations, Supremes or even The Beatles (well, except for Live and Let Die ).

Oh, man, love me some KC and the Sunshine Band. Back in about 1989, I spent a summer working for  Kline Chevrolet in VA. I wore a Kansas City ball cap, because the blue matched the Kline work uniform and I figured KC = Kline Chevrolet. There was one guy in the garage where I detailed my cars who always called me “KC and the Sunshine Band” because of my hat. Good times.

You know your old when anything from your childhood is classed as ‘old’, ‘old school’, ‘classic’, ‘back in the days’, etc...

When you start making vocal strain noises getting out of a living room chair, car seat, etc... and sighs when getting into a living room chair or into the car and sit. When you get out of low chairs or sofas and move to get up, but don’t then have to plan where best to put your hands and arms to lift yourself out of the seat.

When you walk down the street or through the city, etc... and see a building you never really noticed before, ask how long it’s been there and get the answer, ‘oh, about 15, 20 or 25 years. I’m not sure. I was a kid when it was built’.

When you can actually remember when some areas were fields.

When you start saying stuff like, 'kids these days', 'didn't have that when I was a lad', 'when we were little, we always played outside, had no computers back then', 'when I was young our greatest gift was our imagination, etc...

That’s just as exactly, terribly ‘80s as I expected. Much of her stuff hasn’t aged all that well, although her debut album is timeless.

MTV was on the air for 4-5 years before I actually saw it. I had to make do with Friday Night Videos & Night Flight , as the extraordinarily rinky-dink, conservative cable provider in the small town I grew up in refused to carry it , and my grandparents on Long Island weren’t about to pay for cable “because of all the smut” (and they were cheap as hell).

Music videos have rarely lived up to what was happening in my brain while listening to music, anyway.

Or they think a cover of a song is the original...

To be fair , that can happen to pretty much anyone. Hell, I only found out a few years ago that Cyndi Lauper’s “Girls Just Wanna  Have Fun” is a cover.

I saw her in ‘83, right before the release of the album with that track, because she opened for The Kinks. That remains the most poorly-chosen opener I’ve ever seen - she got booed offstage (not just boos - lots of morons screaming “whore!” and worse at her, and more than a few beer bottles landed on stage). At the time, a Venn diagram of Kinks fans & Lauper fans must have been two completely separate circles.

Yeah they basically thought it was a shirt about the cash money meme. I feel like most of my friends have no interest in having a well rounded musical palet te. There are one or two that are hard into classic rock but few with as diverse tastes as I.

And this is the generation that still remembers VHS. I worry for the generation that was born with an iPhone in their hands. I had to wait until 13 to get an iPod 2 and that could barely run flappy bird. I had no money for songs and of all things I ended up with basically all REM and Band of Horses albums. The more I think about it the weirder that is that I never bought any music of my own but I was broke.
